Syracuse native Hughie Stone Fish is still bringing the funny — and is busier than ever.
Stone Fish, a Jamesville-DeWitt High School graduate, was a finalist on NBC’s new reality competition “Bring the Funny” this summer with comedy boy band Lewberger. Now he’s getting ready to go on tour with the trio on top of his solo music career, work for improv comedy troupe Second City Hollywood, and a new collaboration with “Seinfeld” star Jason Alexander for Funny Or Die.
“How Cartoons Brainwashed Us with Jewish Stereotypes” is a new video on the Will Ferrell-owned comedy site, showing historical cartoon drawings that perpetuated racist and anti-Semitic stereotypes. The 3-minute clip is set to music with lead vocals by Alexander featuring Stone Fish; Alexander and Stone Fish also co-wrote the lyrics with Dwayne Colbert and Neil Garguilo.
“Before the time that pictures moved, cartoons lampooned and mocked the Jews,” the song goes. “Depicted big-nosed, hunchbacked and crude, to be Jewish became taboo.”
The video mixes humor with educational messages, chronicling how those early images may have helped normalize the idea of Jews as villains, leading to characters like Gargamel in “The Smurfs” and goblin bankers in the “Harry Potter” films.
“Don’t make someone a bad guy because of their race,” Alexander and Stone Fish plead.

Stone Fish says he was thrilled to be a part of the project, especially with Alexander, who was in Stone Fish’s hometown earlier this year to direct a play at the Syracuse Stage.
“When Dwayne told me he was working on a series about how cartoons have brainwashed us with racism, sexism, and anti-semitism, I was super stoked for my homie to be again using comedy to look at tough topics,” Stone Fish said. “When he called me and told me he needed me to rap at the end of the song about anti-semitism, and be featured and get a writing credit with Jason Alexander, I jumped!”
The video is part of an ongoing series at FOD to support the Anti-Defamation League’s mission to stop anti-Semitism. The ADL uses donations to pay for anti-bias education and efforts to stop hate crimes.
Meanwhile, Stone Fish has concerts lined up with Lewberger, which draws its inspiration from musical comedy acts like The Lonely Island and Tenacious D. The trio, featuring his friends Keith Habersberger and Alex Lewis, were one of just five acts to reach the finals of “Bring the Funny,” losing in the last episode to The Valleyfolk.
“The finals experience was maybe the coolest,” Stone Fish told syracuse.com. “Our goal was just to play cheeseballs on TV, and by the time we got there we had so much fun that they were giving us a higher budget. There were like 20 people working backstage… [and] it was cool to see everyone in Syracuse supporting us.”

Stone Fish says no Central New York shows are booked at the moment, but he promises he’ll perform in Syracuse soon — hopefully both with Lewberger and as a solo artist. He recently released the appropriately titled solo album, “Look How Quickly Everything’s Changing,” collaborated with Max Mimaroglu, Joshua Stone and others to create a music video about local pride called “Welcome to Syracuse,” and has a new song out called “Love Trees Wine.”
Stone Fish, who graduated from J-D in 2007, sounds extremely busy but he calls all of it his dream job.
“I get to make people laugh and tour across the country,” Stone Fish said of Lewberger.

He also gets to “really look within and share about my experiences” as a solo performer, he added. “I really like to be able to make an impact and to try help fix some of the problems our country has created trough theater. And I’m always really passionate about Syracuse and working with people in Syracuse and helping.”
“I’m living my dream job every day and every new opportunity is a great one to get… [and] make the world a better place.”
