Yankees’ Adam Ottavino makes great (and funny) point about his struggles – SILive.com

NEW YORK — The Yankees are going to have to lean heavily on their bullpen if they want to beat Houston and reach the World Series.

That means Adam Ottavino, who’s had a bad postseason so far, will have to turn it around.

“The good news is,” he said, “I can’t be this bad forever.”

A 4-1 win over the Astros in Game 5 of the ALCS on Friday at Yankee Stadium meant that the Yankees staved off elimination for at least one more day. After the victory, they took a redeye flight to Houston, where they will have to win Games 6 and 7 to advance to face the Nationals in the championship.

Manager Aaron Boone said that while Luis Severino would start a potential Game 7, he didn’t have everything figured out yet for Game 6.

That meant the Yankees will likely go with a bullpen day, probably starting with righty Chad Green, who could be followed by a bunch of arms.

That group would almost definitely include Ottavino, who posted a 1.90 ERA in 73 games in the regular season but has an 11.57 ERA in seven tries in the playoffs.

Most recently, Ottavino allowed the only two hitters he faced to reach base (one eventually scored) in the Yankees’ Game 4 loss. He also surrendered a pair of runs in the Game 3 defeat. He has four appearances this postseason in which he failed to retire a single batter.

He said his confidence hasn’t wavered.

“No, definitely not,” he said. “I know I’m a good pitcher. Stuff like this doesn’t last.”

Ottavino added the pitching staff, as of late Friday night, didn’t know how it would be used in Game 6.

“They usually do a good job communicating what to expect in terms of starter and stuff like that, and they’ll roll us out as much as they can,” Ottavino said. “Obviously, things don’t always go to plan, but I think the biggest thing has been, be ready for anything. That’s the way it’s been the whole playoffs. Gotta maintain that mentality because we’ve got to do whatever it takes.”

He added that it will be ready, regardless.

“Of course,” he said. “This is what you want. It doesn’t matter how you start. It’s how you finish. That’s the mentality. We’ve got to win two games by any means necessary.”
