Pumpkin carver Michael Valeroso will be at McArthurGlen outlet mall on Sunday to create a Halloween design on a 200-pound pumpkin.
Valeroso, who works as a helicopter mechanic, spends his leisure time carving intricate designs into pumpkins.

That passion has grown over the last few years, with Valeroso’s art becoming more detailed.
Valeroso said his interest in pumpkin carving started at a YVR Halloween event in 2008.
“(Pumpkin carving) isn’t just a game; it’s a way to create a unique piece of art. It’s pretty cool to see the pumpkin developing a ‘personality’ after carving its exterior skin,” Valeroso said. “And I always enjoy using my imagination to create something and seeing people’s reactions.”
Since then, Valeroso has begun his self-taught journey by watching lots of tutorial videos and carving pumpkins at home. He also watches an American reality pumpkin-carving competition show, Halloween Wars.
Valeroso has sculpted funny-looking pumpkins for the BC Children’s Hospital during the past few years. And he plans to continue this project this year.
“I hope my artwork can help children forget pain,” said Valeroso.
The live carving takes place at McArthurGlen Designer outlet mall on Oct. 27 from noon to 3 p.m. in front of Intepretive Garden Piazza.
