TORONTO — Jordan Binnington, circa 2000, was pumped. His father, John, had driven them 40 minutes to Toronto from their home in Richmond Hill, Ontario, to see his first NHL game and his favorite player, the Maple Leafs’ Curtis Joseph.
It would be a night of father-son bonding at its best, but as the two left the Air Canada Centre and approached John’s white Chevy Blazer, that all changed.
“We were walking to the parking lot and I remember seeing the window and thinking, ‘Wow, the car is broken into,’” John said. “I was ticked off, but for Jordan, you’re 8 or 9, you’re thinking, ‘What’s going on here?’ He was a little shocked, I guess, as anybody would be. You know, it’s a little intimidating.”
John needed to keep Jordan calm, and with shards of glass on the front passenger seat and no way to prevent the chilling air from blowing in on the ride home, he had to keep him safe, too.
