On September 24, House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced the launch of an official impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump. The move sent a shock through the nation, and one of the aftershocks — perhaps the most delightful one — was an explosion of impeachment-related memes on social media. People across the internet seized the energy created by the historic moment with a bevy of hilarious reactions.
The hashtag #ImpeachmentParty blew up on Twitter, with toasts, flowers, speculation about crowd size, and even catnip for some lucky kitties.
When They See Us writer/director Ava DuVernay asked what everyone would be wearing for the event, showing off her own red carpet look from the 2019 Emmys as inspiration. In the replies, people shared their own impeachment party inspo ranging from the casual all the way to some Met Gala 2019 looks from Laverne Cox and Lady Gaga. Comic Jay Jurden sagely pointed out that this is only the beginning and the real impeachment party is yet to come (followed by a day off of work for good measure).
One user seemed to be simultaneously celebrating news of the party and National Voter Registration Day when she wrote in an #ImpeachmentParty tweet, “Finally 18 already got my voters registration ready to vote Trump out the office.”
Meanwhile on Instagram, people were getting their popcorn ready and literally clowning Trump and others. Someone even dialed up a special Ben & Jerry’s flavor called “Impeachmint.”
Not all of the celebration was jubilant, though, as many seemingly couldn’t forget the long road the nation has traveled to this point (and the long road to impeachment that lays ahead). Filmmaker Matthew A. Cherry depicted his own celebration as a man dancing on the roof of a burning house. In another tweet, a totaled car puttered along as a symbol of how exhausted many felt heading into the impeachment process.
Not every tweet was well-received either. Pelosi had a central role in the announcement, but it marked a drastic change in her earlier attitudes about impeachment as too “disruptive.” Business Insider reported that she apparently had a change of heart thanks to a scandal involving Trump’s alleged attempt to coax the Ukranian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy into investigating 2020 Democratic contender Joe Biden and his son, which Pelosi referenced in her address to the nation.
So when Crooked Media writer and producer Travis Helwig posted a photoshopped image of Pelosi’s head on a meme-ready image of Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge celebrating her big night at the Emmys, it wasn’t met with positive reviews.
Podcast host Ira Madison III seemed to sum up the energy around Pelosi finally making the call for an official inquiry with an edited video of musical icon Brittney Spears making a big entrance — to an entirely silent crowd.
Impeachment is a complicated and lengthy process, but if the official inquiry’s announcement is any sign, there will be plenty of people ready to rally around it every step of the way.
