Fox News anchor Shepard Smith described President Trump’s recent use of a doctored map as “inexplicable.”
Coming out of a commercial break, Smith began, “Some things in Trumplandia are inexplicable. This week’s edition, the president’s ongoing claim that Alabama was at risk from Hurricane Dorian. It wasn’t. Maybe he got some bad info from somebody. Maybe he made a mistake. Maybe he was confused. We don’t know. But he was wrong. And since for days and days, he’s been insisting with fake visual aids in hand that he was right.”
He then aired a clip of Trump from Sunday warning that Alabama could be hit, despite the national weather service having said otherwise at that time.
Smith continued after the clip, “That was wrong. It gave birth to a lot of very funny memes. But the subject of the goof was too serious, so the national weather service swiftly corrected him issuing a statement from the office in Birmingham.”
The president discussed Hurricane Dorian with reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, using a map depicting the hurricane’s predicted trajectory to prove his point that Alabama was in the area that could have been hit.
The map appeared to have been doctored, however, with an additional line drawn in black Sharpie to expand the storm’s reach westward. The president’s comments were in defense of tweets he sent out claiming that Alabama was still in the storm’s path, despite contradictory information.
